Fresh, young blood starting to make their presence felt in the Philippine Table Tennis scene. Yes, there's a lot of them in this yearender edition of Binay Cup held last Dec.1-2, 2012
at the Makati Coliseum, Phils.

"The first time is always the best time to be champion!"

Men's Non-rank Event: Champion
Caril John Magaso quoted in Facebook: "Another level-up!" for the 14-year old High School Junior at the National University, Phils.

Still euphoric from a well-deserved victory, Nashspinner recounts how he survived seasoned veterans climbing his way up the Non-rank ladder. Definitely talent & skill must be there and Nash, tireless in training, has both, and stamina too, and now possesses a wicked counterspin which caught a lot of opponents off-guard. But perhaps, what really made the difference was his desire to dominate the competition. Coming from a Silver Medal in the last Binay Cup outing, he believed there was only one way to go... up, and towards the Gold.

The Road To Victory
Quarterfinals. Nash toppled H. Tiongson (Team Tollways), 3-1.

Nash's clever reception throughout the match kept veteran Homber guessing where the ball was going, somehow reducing the sting from his 3rd ball attacks. That provided a good counterattack opportunity for the youngster.

Both players loved to slug it out from mid-distance, taking the ball around the table. Some heartrending rallies happened here.

In the end, breaks went Nash's way getting more attacks in and eventually wrapping up the match.

____________________

Semifinals. Nash ousted R. Lavendia  (Team Balik2X), 3-1.

The ladder just got steeper. Next in line was a veteran topspin looper, and Randy's extremely wide swings can be impossibly confusing.

Nash was able to get some points on service aces and played his topspin counters brilliantly when Randy's powerloops started coming in.

It was really a battle of composure and focus. Randy committed more attack errors in the endgame prompting Nash to step up his own offensive patterns, managed to get more shots in,  running away
with the victory.

One to go... now Nash had a clear shot for the Gold!

Finals. Nash upsets N. Cruz (San Beda), 3-1.

Nash was going up against a San Beda College mainstay and former top junior player. A battle of young bloods indeed. Nico got the first set moving very well, blocking solidly, handing Nash some hard FH crosses.

Then, surprisingly, he retreated to a defensive distance and started lobbing. Was he toying or tiring? Nash must have read it was the latter and tried forcing Nico to chase the ball more with deep left-right combinations. Tied the match at 1-1.

After the huddle, Nash tried a jackrabbit start, hoping to get Nico to run with him and drown in exhaustion. Counting on his leaner frame to carry him through the sheer stamina test, Nash increased the pace even more with relentless hooks and topspins keeping Nico busy just blocking them. Nico tried to regain the offensive but was missing shots and lost the set. Strategy seemed to be working and Nash was leading 2-1.

Nash, advised to keep the pressure on, worked real hard to engage Nico in longer rallies, continuously pounding him with spinny deep corner shots and closed the 4th set with a big down-the-line FH bomb ... for the Gold.

The 20th Binay Cup is Nash's 2nd successful defense of his 14U crown. Nash beat St. Martin Montessori bet Carlo Mateo (3-0) in the quarterfinals. In the semis, Nash pulled up a from-the-behind win against Palarong Pambansa compatriot Jomari Inginiero of UE (3-2). And in the championship match, Nash flattened K. Cabrido of Makati Panthers (3-0) with consistent granite-like blocks and  vicious fastloops & topspin counterattacks.

Outside of Binay Cup, Nash and Cabrido are teammates in the National University Bulldogs Junior Table Tennis Team.

______________________________________

For the 3rd consecutive time, 14-year old, high school junior, Nash has campaigned, and took the Silver Medal, in the Boys 17U event.

Quarterfinals: Nash (TATAND) x Francis Igno (FEU)
Nash got past FEU's Francis Igno (3-1) holding out against the latter's ferocious forehand blows. Igno started out with crisp, accurate FH attacks and took the 1st set.

In the 2nd, he started commiting errors with his backhand blocks and Nash exploited it by pounding his opponent's weakened backhand side and tied the match at 1-1.

Igno tried going around the ball on his BH side but Nash has a ready down-the-line counterattack deep into Igno's FH side catching the him outbalanced at the other corner of the table. Nash was able to keep this up for the next 2 sets and Igno had to bow out of the match after the 4th set.

_______________________________

Semifinals: Nash (TATAND) x Ryan Sy (College of St. Benilde)
This was a rather bloodier affair and actually came as a surprise win. Nash outlasted Sy (3-2) in a spin-block-counterspin battle which lasted till the deciding 5th set.

Nash was able to limit Sy's offensive patterns by immediately seizing initiative as early as the 2nd ball preventing the CSB's lefty collegiate star fromunleashing his massive sidespin loops with which he wiped out his opponents in the earlier rounds of the tournament.

It was an even battle, with the momentum shifting from one player to another, until Nash broke away at 10-7 in the 5th set. Sy, breathing on his back, almost got a deuce at 10-9 but Nash aced the match with an unexpected forehand topspin to the center of Sy's court.

_______________________________

Championship Match: Nash (TATAND) x Gil Ablanque (UST)
Ablanque was the defending champion and Nash was a returning challenger. Nash drew first blood when he got a 10-8 lead from a well-executed BH-BH-FH attack combination and then proceeded to take the 1st set with a service ace.

Ablanque started the 2nd set strong with a 4-0 lead. But towards the endgame, Nash got him into trouble again at 10-8 after digging up an edgeball, and then turning around Ablanque's killing blow — a lefty FH smash near the net — with an equally fantastic mid-distance BH counter back to the far side of the court. However, the UST star, remaining undaunted, took back 2 quick points with his wicked FH loops, got a deuce, and went on to even up the match at 1-1.

The 3rd set and 4th sets saw a couple of unbelievable rallies to the delight of the audience but the tiring 14-year old challenger started committing errors and Ablanque went on to take both sets and successfully defended his 17U crown.

Post Tournament

After the 20th Binay Cup, Ryan Rodney Jacolo will now be reverting back to his hometeam, Nashspinner, to resume continuous training for the 75th UAAP in October this year.

After 3 consecutive crowns, the handlers of Nashspinner are now considering that he may no longer compete in future 14U events and will instead focus on 17U and higher events.
