4th Quarter Binay Cup 2010

It's an early LOPTTA Christmas at the 4th Quarterly Binay Cup 2010.
Congratulations to Mr. Diotay Lopue whose children proteges hacked through the Binay Cup 2010 like an "ispading in a sugarcane field during harvest time".

The LOPTTA children took 5 out of the 8 Championship trophies in their respective age groups from 10U up to 17U - a whopping 62.5% batting average for Bacolod's premiere table tennis club. Almost, if not, all LOPTTA kids who campaigned in Makati were veterans of the Palarong Pambansa 2010 held in Tarlac earlier this year.

If anything, Binay Cup is all about children... we salute Coach Gigi and company for this noble concept.

Gomez E.S.), LOPTTA chief Mr. Diotay Lopue and Binay Cup top honcho Coach Gigi Aguinalde.

And of course, Marell Lagunday captured the women's non-rank crown - who said that the LOPTTA juggernaut are all kids?
Congrats gid Mr. Diotay and LOPTTA...

Who has the biggest heart?
Double congratulations to the other Binay Cup champions - Jorge Victorio of Laguna (Boys 12U) & Lyr Leyva of UE (Girls 17U). These few valiant kids didn't cave in to the onslaught of the LOPTTA juggernaut who simply demolished everyone on their way to the Finals.
One big common denminator bonds all these winners, they're all Palarong Pambansa veterans from their respective regions!
Will the coming March 2011 edition of Binay Cup turn out to be a preview of sorts of the Palarong Pambansa less than 2 months later?
With the free accomodation in Makati and all... ask the Bacolod and Romblon folks...

Kakosa is on a roll...

Congrats to METTA chief Ting Ledesma for winning this Binay Cup's Men's Open over steep opposition from Andrew Timzon of TATAND. Ting also felled LOPTTA's top warrior Isaias Seronio on his way to the Finals. The big, dark horse of the tournament was Davao's top lefty hitter Ablanque...

Ting Ledesma's fiery style of play never cease to amaze everyone. Once the swinging starts at 0-0, it's all high energy action up to the finishing kick at 11(++). And Mr. Ting does not seem to run out of steam at all (sometimes I'm beginning to suspect that it's not really cigs he's smoking but maybe oxygen sticks, and the smoke is just a decoy!) .

Mr. Ledesma, we just want you to know that we think the 'Give-it-all-you've-got' (with all those full swings) game attitude and 'A-gallon-of-sweat-for-every-point' (with all those breakneck spurts and lunges towards and away from the table) style of play like yours is what makes Table Tennis extraordinary and a great sport to watch. How I wish that all the budding pongers get to see, and draw inspiration from, your official games.

Bulldog Freshman Ryan Rodney A. Jacolo gets National University into the 2010 Manila H.S. Boys Table Tennis Team

The Competition.
The Manila Meet is a part of the ladder competition conducted by DepEd culminating in the yearly Palarong Pambansa held every summer.

The Acid Test.
NASH, a 12-year old NU freshman and a 2-time Palarong Pambansa veteran in the Elementary Division (formerly from Quezon City), finished the 17U tournament with a 7-2 win/loss record. Mentored by NU Headcoach Judit Yulde, NASH had a perfect Eliminations Round. He was set back once in the Round of 16 but fought back hard to prevail in the Quarterfinals. NASH entered the Magic 4 bracket with a good 6-1 card, sneaked past Daniel Cua in the semis, but lost his next match to Walden Ledesma who went on to bag the Silver Medal.

The Victory
Ranking 3rd in a field of 32 after 3 days of grueling action wasn't a bad start for NASH (Ryan Rodney A. Jacolo) in his maiden campaign in this year's Manila Meet Table Tennis Competition for H.S. Boys.

The Results.
Top 4 players coming from both public and private schools were selected to compete for the City of Manila in the NCR Meet in February next year.
Champion : Michael Villamor (Arellano University)
2nd Place : Walden Ledesma (Chiang Kai Shek School)
3rd Place : Ryan Rodney Jacolo (National University)
4th Place : Daniel Cua (St. Stephen)

2 firsts for NASH:
This is the first time the National University join the Manila Meet.
This is NASH's first ever try-out for the Manila H.S. Boys Table Tennis Team.

Not bad for a Bronze Medal...

Bulldog RYAN RODNEY JACOLO - UAAP 73rd Season " Rookie of the Year "

The Rookie of the Year 2010.
National University high school freshman Ryan Rodney A. Jacolo — NASH — of the NU Bulldogs Juniors Table Tennis Team was awarded "Rookie of the Year" in the Juniors Division of the recently concluded 73rd Season UAAP Table Tennis Championships held at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym from September 25-26 & October 2-3, 2010.

The Mentors.

Winning Performance.

NASH, a 2-time Palarong Pambansa veteran (2009 in Tacloban City & 2010 in Tarlac City) and the 2010 NCR Champion in the Grade School level, contributed an impressive 10 win 1 loss performance to the Bulldogs’ campaign which eventually led to a Silver Medal, an improvement to last year’s Bronze Medal output by the Bulldogs before he was drafted into the team.

The Award.
12-year old NASH is thrilled with his most recent award and admits that this is, so far, the highest achievement that has happened in his short 5-year career in Competitive Table Tennis.

NASH, The Player.
NASH learned to hit his first pingpong ball, at the age of 7, on the table of world-class chopper Mr. Jaime Seminiano, of Bicol and Quezon City.

In 2007, he won his first big tournament Championship Trophy in the 1st Q.C. Mayor’s Cup. NASH loves winning, and all the perks that came with it, and became a “certified pingpong addict” and, since then, started getting serious training from his Personal Coach who is also his Father.

He topped his 2008 with back-to-back Championships in the prestigious Makati’s Binay Cup Age Group Category.

The following year in 2009, while in Grade 5, NASH proved himself to be among the best Grade School paddlers in Metro Manila by his stellar performance in the 2009 NCR Meet and representing NCR at the 2009 Palarong Pambansa in Tacloban City under former Philippine Team member Coach Richard Ching. The NCR Boy’s Team won the Silver Medal that year.

The Present.
This year, NASH is on a roll! His 2010 NCR crown and Palarong Pambansa victories in Tarlac qualified him to be one of the top picks for the Juniors Division in the universities. The decision to get him drafted into the Bulldogs’ Juniors Team is proving to be a brilliant one for NASH and his handlers as justified by both his individual and team awards in the UAAP.

UAAP Awarding Ceremonies.
NASH with the National University Sports Director Mr. J. Baculi at the UAAP 73rd Season Closing Ceremonies held at the Araneta Coliseum, Phils.

*NASH is also a proud member of Amoranto Table Tennis.

Metta Cup 2

When something good happens, why not tell it to the world. This blog is dedicated to help promote Table Tennis in whatever small way it can...

First of all congratulations to Mr. Ting Ledesma, Mr. Jackson Que and company for the very successful METTA CUP 2, the biggest Table Tennis tournament in the Philippines!!

Metta Cup 2. Manila. April 22-25, 2010. 4 days of intense international table tennis action - what every table tennis tournament should be - here's why...

Venue.
Brilliantly set in the air-conditioned Ninoy Aquino Stadium just across the Harrison Plaza Mall in Manila. Admission was free to the general public.

Opening.
The event kicked off with a free collared shirt for all participants distributed at the registration table. (Like buying a shirt and getting to play in a tournament for free? Well that depends on how one sees it...)

Then the customary parade of the competitors into the stadium. Practically all Metro Manila pongers were there - Universities and Colleges spearheaded the competitors. Fil-Chi was there. TATAND was there. ANDRO was there. PNP was there. Different clubs and schools from Makati to Pateros and up north from Quezon City were in attendance.

Definitely not just another local Metro Manila tournament, LOPTTA of Bacolod was present. So was HUACHING of Cebu. Southern Tagalog was represented by Laguna, Cavite and San Beda of Rizal. Mindoro was there. Baguio led the participants from Northern Luzon.

Tan Chew of Indonesia had a big contingent including some of their national players and even 2 junior players making Metta Cup 2 a truly International tournament in the offing.

The trophies were unveiled and the games was officially opened by no less than Metta president Mr. Ting Ledesma.

The Tournament.
12 tables on the opening day, an uniformed umpire and a scorer per table. 2 practice tables accomodated players warming up for their upcoming matches. Coaches booths were provided ringing the playing area. Everything was standard... very neat.

From NashBlogs

Pairings was well balanced and scheduling was pretty fair. Hell, who would mind waiting another 30 mins. (or even 1 hour) for his game in an air-conditioned gym, enjoying food and drinks and watching other high quality table tennis matches? Well, nobody was brooding, no one complained of the heat, everyone was in good spirits... the venue obviously did it and everyone knew it.

Matches from the lowest age groups up to the Men's Open events were skillfully planned and played simultaneouly. Game schedules posted bore date, time and table number for the players' easy reference. Matches were called on time. Everything was standard... very neat.

Towards the end of the of the tournament, the 12 tables were reduced to just 4 for the Finals matches... and of course to everyone's delight. Now the "Finalists" are free to play their attacks and counter-attacks from mid-distance and farther. Even the video people were having a field day. Everyone was having a clear shot!

Results.
The Indonesian guests topped both ends of the events capturing the gold in the Men's Open, 12U and 15U Boy's Events.
From NashBlogs

Then it was a pretty even sharing of gold between RP and Indonesia in the middle categories with the Filipino Table Tennis wonderkid from MIndanao Ian Lariba dominating the women's categories and LOPTTA lording the Team Event. Mr. Billy Yap of HUACHING was champion in the special Platinum Category besting his Indonesian counterpart.

Closing.
The Closing Ceremonies was started by a speech from Mr. Diotay Lopue of LOPTTA who was remembered as saying probably the best one-liner comment in the whole tournament when he stated that "Metta 2 has improved 1000% from Metta 1"... or something to that effect. Pardon me sir, maybe I missed some words here but I saw everyone must have been feeling exactly what you meant that afternoon... I could still remember that feeling. Thank you.

PSC Chairman Mr. Angping graced the closing and so did Mayor Lim of Manila. Mr. Billy Yap of HUACHING and the Indonesian heads of delegation said their respective pieces.

Special awards were given to special pongers like the "Cutest Award" which went to a 6-yr old(?) boy who can whack the ball with a mean overhead smash. Also the "Best Actor" award went to a ponger who stirred quite a lot of mixed emotions in the audience for the better part of an hour. Oh boy, that was different... only in Metta Cup 2!

Prizes.
Cash prizes had been very clear right from the start... and it was not even a surprise. Congratulations to Mr. Ledesma on that one.

Registration fee was higher than what I was used to. WHY? That was a big question for me before the tournament but it turned out it was worth it when I found myself basking in the upper box with my feet up, 25 degrees C, with a bagful of nuts and cold coke, watching Mr. Ferre punishing his opponent with his chop and smash combinations...

... and Mr. Cua brandishing his "liha" like a kris against Mr. Irwanto and Coach Senyong de Guzman in one of the practice tables. Hey, sirs, are we seeing a "Liha Category" in Metta Cup 3? Just asking.

...And the raffle.
This really ought to make the difference. Every tournament entry gets the ponger a corresponding raffle entry. So I promised myself to go back on the last day, enjoy the Finals matches and wait for the raffle after the awarding ceremonies. My son joined 2 events so he has 2 shots at the scooter. Not bad at all! A lot of us were in the same boat that day.

Ponger crowd enjoying the raffle
From NashBlogs

The prizes? In the prospectus, Mr. Ledesma promised a lot of prizes. Come the actual raffle draw, everything was there on the table PLUS... did they give away 10 or 12 cellphones? Well not sure which except in my copy of the invitation downloaded in mid-march, only 4 phones were listed to be given away. Thanks Mr. Ledesma!

Also they threw in lots of MP5 Players (not listed in the invitation) and... a 32-inch(?) LCD TV! (not listed in the invitation). Now we surely wouldn't mind that! Keep going sir!

Looking Forward to Metta 3.
This is just a wishlist. If it borders on the outrageous, well, wishlists are sometimes meant to be just like that:
1. Venue in a mall setting maybe the Skydome or Trinoma Activity Area or somewhere in MOA (I told you this might border on the outrageous... but then media buyers are sometimes inclined to gamble on something out of the ordinary as long as it is exhibited in front of consumers).
2. Maybe some Thai, Vietnamese or Malaysian delegations? Come and get Yon if you can.
3. Raffle also for the general public?
4. Maybe some greens on/around the risers during awarding? Like in Liebherr, naks!!

Again congratulations to Mr. Ting Ledesma, Mr. Jackson Que and company!! More! More! More!
